Full Scholarship from Stanford for Boğaziçi Graduate Büşra's Doctoral Studies
Büşra Marşan, a 2020 graduate of Boğaziçi University’s Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies, will continue her academic journey at Stanford University—one of the world’s leading higher education institutions—after completing her master’s degree in linguistics at Boğaziçi University.
Marşan has been accepted into Stanford’s linguistics Ph.D. program with a comprehensive full scholarship that covers tuition and provides monthly financial support. Her research will focus on enhancing the efficiency of translation and virtual assistant systems by leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies.
Stanford is a Global Leader in My Field
“The application process for leading universities abroad was extremely competitive and required my full attention. I completed my applications during the fall and winter of last year and began receiving responses around November. I was accepted by several universities, but I chose Stanford, which had always been my dream school. My research experience at Boğaziçi University’s Text Analytics and Bioinformatics Laboratory (TABİLAB) and the invaluable support of my thesis advisors, Dr. Ümit Atlamaz and Dr. Ömer Demirok, played a major role in my acceptance. I specialize in computational linguistics, and Stanford is a global leader in this field with its advanced centers and laboratories. Its proximity to major companies like Google is also a great advantage.”
I Will Work to Further Improve Language Models
“In my master’s thesis, I focused on semantics. In daily conversations, our expressions are sometimes ambiguous, yet as humans, we manage to understand each other. However, language models are not yet as capable in this area. So, how can these models reach human-level understanding? During my master’s studies, I worked on answering this question and improving the language models used in translation and virtual assistant systems. At Stanford, where I will begin my studies this September, I aim to further enhance these models using artificial intelligence and machine learning. I also plan to join the internationally recognized Computational Linguistics Research Laboratory at Stanford, which conducts groundbreaking work in this field.”
I Want to Return to Boğaziçi After Gaining Industry Experience
“After completing my doctoral studies, I would like to gain experience working at leading companies in the field. This will allow me to gain insights not only into academia but also into the industry. Eventually, I hope to return to Boğaziçi University as a faculty member. My university provided me with countless opportunities during my undergraduate and graduate education, and I want to give back by contributing as an academic. The thought of sharing my experience in computational linguistics gained in the United States with new generations of Boğaziçi students truly excites me.”
